Newly Braced

1. Intraoral and extraoral appliances should be used regularly at the times specified by the ortodontist.

2. The appliances (devices) should be kept clean. After brushing the teeth after meals, the appliances should be brushed and cleaned with the same toothbrush.

3. If screw appliances are used, they should be activated (rotated) as recommended by the orthodontist (e.g. 1 or 2 times a week).

4. If the patient does not wear and use the screw appliance after activation of the screw appliance, the harmony of the appliance in the mouth will deteriorate. In this case, the appliance may need to be replaced.

5. Intraoral and extraoral appliances should be removed while eating, during sports activities, swimming in the sea and pool. In addition, acidic drinks such as cola should not be drunk while the appliances are in the mouth and sticky substances such as chewing gum should not be used.

6. Appliances should be kept in a special appliance box unless they are worn.

7. The appliances should not be lost or broken.

8. A book should be read aloud with the appliance in the mouth to prevent speech impairment.

9. Lost, broken or unwearable appliances must be replaced and the new appliance fee is paid by the patient.

10. Teeth and appliances should be cleaned before entering the orthodontic clinic. The patient should bring the appliance box and toothbrush with him/her when coming to the control.

11. Patients should attend their treatment appointments regularly.

12. Doctors have the authority to terminate the treatment of patients who do not attend their appointments regularly.

13. When both the cleaning of the teeth and the cleaning of the devices used are not sufficient, when the appliances are not used regularly as specified by the physician, when they are lost or broken, the treatment is terminated after a final warning to the patient.

14. Materials used in orthodontic treatment are covered by the patient.

The most important issue is dental care during braces treatment..

  • Due to the brackets attached to your teeth, it is very easy for accumulations to form on the teeth and it becomes difficult to remove them.
  • If the food residues on the teeth are not completely removed in a regular manner, bacterial growth will occur in these areas, and as a result of the acid secreted by these bacteria, demineralization called 'white spots' may occur in the enamel crystal structure. Such a situation can only be understood at the end of the treatment when white spots remain on the enamel after the braces are removed. This situation is usually seen in young adults who do not brush their teeth despite all kinds of warnings. To avoid such a situation, teeth should be brushed thoroughly at least three times a day.
  • Even if brushing is not possible at noon for some reason, teeth should be brushed whenever possible without waiting for the evening, and the number of brushings should be reached by brushing again before going to bed at night.
  • Daytime brushing should last 2-3 minutes and nighttime brushing should last 3-4 minutes. Daily interface cleaning as recommended by your doctor should not be neglected.
  • Acidic drinks such as cola, fanta, soda should not be consumed during treatment. The high acidity in these drinks may cause permanent white stains on the tooth enamel as mentioned above. Fruit juices also contain some acid, although not as much as cola and fanta type drinks. After drinking fruit juice, drink a small amount of water or rinse the mouth with water.
  • Nothing hard should be taken into the mouth during treatment. Hard nuts such as hazelnuts, peanuts, chickpeas and almonds should be avoided. Of course, there is no harm in consuming them by passing them through a grinder. Pitted foods such as olives and cherries should be removed from the outside. Be careful with popcorn, the ones that are not fully popped are a complete bracket enemy. Hard parts of foods such as toast, hard toast bread should not be consumed.
  • Breadsticks and wraps should be cut into small pieces by hand and eaten with the back teeth. You can bite into a hamburger.
  • Among the foods that should be consumed with caution are fruits such as apples, pears and peaches that are eaten by biting with the front teeth. These must be cut into small pieces and eaten with the back teeth.

Hard foods eaten without paying attention can cause your braces to move, in which case you should contact your doctor. If the brackets are displaced, they need to be glued to the tooth surface again. This means that some of the treatment time you have already spent will be wasted, resulting in a longer treatment time.
